CharityVillage recognizes the contributions of each of the tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations within the Canadian sector, as well the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who support the organizations. While our awards will recognize contributions from specific organizations and individuals, it is important to remember that, as a sector, we are all in this together for the betterment of society as a whole.

Best Nonprofit Employer - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Two Award Categories:

  • Nonprofit Employer – 20+ staff
  • Nonprofit Employer – under 20 staff

This award recognizes nonprofit organizations who are committed to socially responsible hiring and onboarding practices, and are actively incorporating policies that encourage diversity, equity, inclusion, community outreach, and/or accessibility within their workplace. This award will be judged by a panel of diversity, equity, and inclusion experts from within the nonprofit sector.

When applying for this award, please consider including the following;

  • A brief overview of your organization’s strategies and initiatives pertaining to its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and programs related to human resources, recruitment, workforce planning, employee engagement, and/or retention.
  • An overview of the achievements of these initiatives over the past year.
  • How your organization promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace to develop an inclusive workplace environment, as well as how your programs are promoted to external candidates.
  • Relevant links, documents or other media to support the application.

Within your submission, please look to demonstrate:

Best Individual Contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Everyday dedicated nonprofit professionals go above and beyond in fostering workplaces that are more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. This award is intended to recognize an individual who, through their own initiative and individual action, has sparked change from within their organization to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive nonprofit workplace. A panel of diversity, equity, and inclusion experts from within the sector will judge this award. Applications for this award may be submitted personally, or by a third-party nomination.

When applying for this award, please include a short overview (300 words or less) of the individual’s achievements, workplace activities, testimonials, relevant links, documents and photos to support the application.

Never has there been such a wide array of fundraising tools available to help nonprofit organizations raise money for their important mission work. This award recognizes an outstanding fundraising campaign by a nonprofit or charity across any fundraising channel. A panel of fundraising experts will judge this award.

When applying for this award, please consider including the following;

  • A brief overview of the fundraising campaign, including its methods, channels and goals.
  • A summary of the campaign’s success and impact, including the amount of funds raised.

Throughout the nonprofit sector, hardworking individual fundraisers are dedicated to connecting donors to important causes by finding new and innovative ways to raise money. This award recognizes exceptional individual achievement in fundraising over the past year. A panel of fundraising experts will judge this award. Applications for this award may be submitted personally, or by a third-party nominator.

With technological advancements occurring every day, there are more opportunities than ever to harness technology for social good. From using immersive VR/AR experiences that address social challenges to using data analytics to enhance donor engagement, and everything in between, organizations are finding innovative ways to advance their mission, improve their programs, or streamline their operations. This award recognizes outstanding or innovative achievements in the use of technology, including but not limited to digital platforms, data analytics, cyber security and other emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, and blockchain. This award will be judged by a panel of experts from within the nonprofit sector.

When applying for this award, please consider including the following;

  • Tell us the story behind your technological innovation: the problem you were trying to solve, the decision-making process for finding a solution, how technology was implemented, and challenges along the way.
  • An overview of the achievements resulting from this innovation over the past year.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our sector and play an essential role in each organization’s success. The past year has brought increasing challenges in recruiting and retaining volunteers, so this award recognizes organizations who have found ways to overcome obstacles and create or maintain a strong volunteer program. A panel of nonprofit sector experts will judge this award.

When applying for this award, please consider including the following;

  • A brief overview of your organization’s strategies and initiatives pertaining to its volunteer program – specifically in the areas of recruitment, engagement, retention and recognition.
  • Demonstrate how your volunteer program has enhanced the work of your organization and created meaningful experience for your volunteers.

Managers of Volunteers play an integral role in their organization by connecting volunteers with meaningful opportunities that make a difference in their communities. This award is for individuals who have demonstrated an ability to advance their organization’s mission while simultaneously maintaining a strong commitment to their volunteer base. A panel of nonprofit sector experts will judge this award. Applications for this award may be submitted personally, or by a third-party nomination.

As the nonprofit sector faces an epidemic of burnout, forward-thinking organizations are implementing strategies to create mentally healthy workplaces where staff and volunteers can thrive. This award celebrates those organizations who, through the use of creative and flexible initiatives, are supporting the work-life balance and psychological health of their teams. A panel of workplace mental health experts will judge this award.

In nonprofit workplaces across the country, there are individuals who stand out as champions for mental health, whether it is through creating innovative wellness initiatives, enacting new organization-wide policies, or fostering psychologically safe and healthy spaces for their staff and/or volunteers. This award is for individuals who have shown leadership in this area, regardless of their position within the organization. A panel of workplace mental health experts will judge this award. Passionate about social justice and committed to finding meaningful careers, younger generations are looking for ways to enter the nonprofit sector. This award recognizes organizations, whatever their mission may be, who excel at recruiting, promoting and engaging young people within their organization as volunteers, employees, or future leaders. For clarity, this award is not limited to youth serving organizations. A panel of nonprofit sector experts will judge this award.

When applying for this award, please consider including the following;

  • A brief overview of your organization’s programs and initiatives (for example, mentorship programs), that successfully build a pipeline for young people as staff, leaders and volunteers within their own organization.
